Announcing XCP 1.6 Beta Release is happy to announce that XCP 1.6 Beta is available! The release is available from the download page:

This release supersedes the XCP 1.5 beta release. A few months ago, the XCP team decided to concentrate their efforts on fixing internal build system issues so that we could release new XCP versions more efficiently. We will be recommending that XCP 1.5 beta users upgrade to XCP 1.6 final when it is released.

New features and improvements

XCP 1.6 has many new features and improvements, most notably Storage XenMotion, improved integration with XenCenter, and massive VLAN scalability improvements. Please read the release notes for details.

Usage survey

For the first time, is asking XCP users to contribute to our usage survey. We want to know more about how and why people use XCP, so that we can continue to make it better. Upon clicking the “download” link, you will be taken to an optional survey page. You don’t have to take the survey if you don’t want to, but we highly encourage everyone to participate.

Test day

Because of the great feedback we got from the Xen 4.2 test days, we’re going to be having a test day specifically for the XCP 1.6 beta (also see test instructions). This test day is scheduled for Tuesday, 9 October. We will be making reminder announcements on the xen-api mailing list.

If you find any issues with XCP 1.6 beta, please report them on the xen-api mailing list with the subject line containing [XCP-1.6-BETA].

Release schedule

The release schedule for XCP 1.6 is as follows:

  • XCP 1.6 Beta release: 1 October
  • XCP 1.6 Beta test day: 9 October
  • XCP 1.6 Final release: 24 October

We will stick to the final release date as long as there are no critical bugs that can’t be fixed in time.

I installed XCP 1.6 and created various guests, including Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 12.10, without any problems. Looks great! And I’m hoping to give GPU passthrough a try in the coming days.

One major area of disappointment: USB passthrough does NOT seem to be configurable through XenCenter. Given that USB passthrough is possible with Xen 4.1, I expected to find it in XCP 1.6.

The final release has been delayed to resolve some bugs. We don’t have a firm delivery date, but please expect a couple of weeks. See here for details:

Thinking ahead to the next version…

Any chance that USB passthrough will be supported in XCP 2.0?

Because XCP doesn’t (at present) support USB passthrough, I’m using Xen with Ubuntu as dom0 for now, and I’m managing guests with Virt-Manager. But I’d much prefer to manage guests using XenCenter. So I hope you’ll please consider adding USB passthrough support to future XCP releases.

I’ll just add that I’ve experimented with installing the XAPI toolstack to Ubuntu (Project Kronos), but so far I can’t find how that approach allows for USB passthrough. Have I missed something? Does the current version of the Project Kronos approach allow for USB passthrough by modifying some configuration file that I can’t seem to find?

Also, in view of all the effort devoted to Project Kronos, any chance we’ll see a move to Ubuntu as dom0 in a future (perhaps alternative) version of XCP?

Of course, if installing the XAPI toolstack on Ubuntu truly were as simple as “apt-get install xcp-xapi” then a move toward a version of XCP that relies on Ubuntu as dom0 might not be needed. But at least in my experience, installing the XAPI toolstack on Ubuntu was far from easy. So a fully rolled iso version that installs and configures the XAPI toolstack along with Ubuntu may be be helpful to many.

After a little more searching, I now see that, although USB passthrough isn’t (and probably won’t be) supported, PCI passthrough (which would allow for passthrough of an entire USB controller) appears to be supported in XCP by way of the xe command line.

Hopefully, XCP 2.0 will include a more intuitive mechanism for configuring PCI passthrough, preferably though XenCenter.

I’ll just add that posts requesting how to configure PCI passthough in XCP are becoming increasingly prevalent: For example, see
